Wisdom Comes
Wisdom comes, finally, at the intersection of tragedy and tenderness, though you’ve been waiting for a lifetime. Though you’ve been waiting like a man in a ratty chair in the ER with a kidney stone, on a list on a clipboard on the night shift, your anonymous pain invisible, impossible to speak it, though they bark their questions and demand explanations and you, like a
deer in the headlights, just want relief, just want to remain hidden, then, if you can’t show some compassion. Just shoot me if you have to. Just shoot me and get it over with.
Wisdom watches you in pain and has no ready answers but she knows you so well, she knows you will crawl on your belly, bleeding, with your last breath coming slowly, to find the one person who can help you and she knows you will live, grateful, because you survived.
