What Warms Your Heart?

We all need anchors. Beauty is an anchor. Poetry. Music. Animals. The Red Dahlias out the kitchen window, a temporary luxury. Winter would kill them, and I would never forgive myself. I do protective work. Unpaid, important, it’s a calling and a vocation. I was not ever warm enough. Too ashamed to complain, unworthy of wanting more, a beggar in my own family. I work in protection. Hurt feelings are my specialty. You feel sad, powerless, helpless, un-productive? You need an anchor. One Red Dahlia, vibrantly shining against the inevitable fading, to hold you here and keep you steady.
