The Heart is a Wild Compass

Measured, mapped, calculated, we feel safer in the mind. It’s orderly, or can be ordered. Feelings are not negotiable. They come and go at will, try to control them, you’re pulled into the current and you have no idea where the river will take you. No idea what shore it will dump you out on.

I’m no longer afraid of being lost or alone. I’ve outlived many dangers. The heart is a wild compass. Each morning it charts its course, while the mind stands gnattering about the weather and the things which need doing, the importance of lists, the perils of forgetting, the endless tasks of living responsibly.

The heart is a little bit unruly but you can trust in its integrity. It sees the ceiling paint flaking off in the shower, and it will get to it, but the Lilies need moving and the swans need feeding and the birds need watering.

Oh for a heart too large to fit in the world’s containers. A heart that spills out and over the edges, messy and unpredictable but free. Dodging the snares, outwitting the traps, hurdling the fences. Wildly free.
