Bella, rising. Photo by Lori B. McCray

Bella lost everyone she loved and flew away, but when she returned, with the love that I had prayed for, she found me as devoted as she left me. I thought she might come back, and then I didn’t. I wonder how she decided. The home of her great Joy was the place of her great Sorrow. To return, bringing new love to it, is the stuff of fairy tales. To hope for ‘Happily Ever After’ after disaster is brave, perhaps naive (naive in the womb, I am an authority), but without such courage, who would ever rise again?

The wings with which she fled are the wings which carried her back again. Stronger. Confident. Courageous. Surely it’s no mistake that Bella has chosen to continue her life’s great adventure in the company of her protectress. Surely she’s come to realize the depth of my devotion. Though William and I were closer, longer, we learned and earned each other’s trust. With or without our dear, sweet William, Bella is my beloved.
