My Words Are Tender Animals

Shy in the beginning, I had to invite them. Entice them.

They had great reason not to trust me. I had to learn

to listen carefully, deeply, even to the uncomfortable.

I had to learn to speak the truth.

If you have to say no, say it gently. If you have to

disappoint, do it kindly. If you have the opportunity

to say exactly what you mean, say yes, because

your words depend on your protection. Be honest,

because love never punishes the truth.

Be honest, because your world is built upon the

clarity of your vision, the depth of your perception,

the integrity of your actions and the power of

your words.

The tender animals rest easy when you are at peace.

They still have teeth, but not much occasion to use them
