What I have of my mother’s possessions (i was 10 turning 11 when she left for the cancer institute. No one told me she was likely dying)

My mother is a black lacquered jewelry box,

a tiny broken ballerina, the music gone the

jewels stolen and yet I open it, wishing to

find treasure, willing her to be there, and

for once, just once, longing to find her

beautiful
