It Just Takes One

Little Lotti (gramma didn’t pronounce her r’s, lol).

I was precious to no one but my mother’s mother. She loved me special, bedraggled daughter of her youngest daughter. She gave me baths in the kitchen sink. I remember! I was three. I hit my head on the cabinet (I came out wonky, what can I say? No one spoke of ‘Fetal Alcohol Syndrome’ back then. No one ever suspected my struggling in school wasn’t just stupidity (or laziness, boredom, lack of motivation)). No matter. I worked twice as hard to appear intelligent. Perhaps I made people laugh so they wouldn’t laugh at me.

Doug made me laugh right off and when I cracked him up, surprisingly, we knotted. It just takes one special person to believe in you. You don’t need the world at your feet. One person to see and love who you are, who has faith in your becoming, who stands beside you, no questions asked. Just one person to tell you they’re so happy you were born.

LBM 7/29/2020 for Grandma Pacella, and Doug, and all my sweet friends
