Rabbit Heart

My rabbits smell of dandelion and clover. Sweet as a field of lavender. Soft as a bowl of apricots. Fresh as summer rain.

In the morning I bring them sunshine and papaya, and they greet me with a dance. When one of them is sick, I know by their not coming. It’s like a needle in my heart.

To them, I am the bringer of great things. Of food and comfort. Of play and happiness. To me, they are the light of joy. A lovely softness. The gentleness of peace.

My rabbits know my voice, know my emotions. Deeply instinctual, they react to my agitation. Because of them, I have learned a steady calmness. A deeper relaxation. An ease in my own body.

Their trust, perhaps the greatest gift of all, is my great blessing. Knowing they are loved, they love me. Knowing I have their love reminds me that I’m love-able. To love and be loved, the treasure of our existence.

I can’t imagine my life without them. I can’t imagine a day without them in it. My heart will always be brimming with rabbits.
