Asiatic Lilies, photo by Lori B. McCray, backstory: a construction crew came by early morning to get into electric box, big ugly institutional green thing sits on our front lawn, our property yet not our property, we’ve lived here 26 years no one has ever touched it and I planted Lilies to soften the ugliness and no one ever said you can’t do that, until Friday. “You aren’t allowed to plant here” and when the worker leaned down to show me the sign on the box he fwacked the lilies, not even budded yet, in their sweet heads, which angered me. I understand I’ve not done the right thing but it wasn’t intentional. No need to be rude. The one woman on the team said, “We’ll come back, and give you time to move these.” And they were getting less sun because of the burgeoning cherry tree, so it’s all fine and good but there’s a LOT of confusion about the ‘planting policy’ and I have written a few letters to straighten it all out, channeling my dear mother-in-law who was so good at that. Thanks for listening.
