Get Off Your High Horse

Scotty’s sword, Doug’s shirt. My muscle

When someone comes at you in full armor, wielding their weapon, ready to take aim, it’s not about you. Hornets are quite peaceable until you poke around in their nest. You can provoke a sleeping dragon but you didn’t cause their fury.

We all have hidden wounds. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could teach our children how to say, “That hurt me. Can we talk about it?” Wouldn’t it be wonderful if partners in conflict could say, “This has hit me in a tender spot. Let me tell you what it reminds me of.” Wouldn’t it be wonderful if opposing views were met with curiosity and interest, and not contempt?

If only we could embrace our adversaries in the place where they were wounded. Once you catch sight of your intricate beauty, your shield and sword become superfluous.
