An Inhospitable Planet

Our culture is contaminated. There aren’t enough therapists to contain the madness. Not enough pills to ameliorate the stress. The goal of therapy is to fit the struggling person into society; a chiropractic adjustment, a better alignment, a temporary fix.

We are a nation of addicts. Personal will is the god we worship. What I want is paramount. What you need is not my problem. We are heartless and unkind at our own peril. A morning in church won’t fix this morass. An editorial won’t address the underlying issues.

We are a people who cannot accept pain. Refusing to be uncomfortable, running furiously away from any kind of suffering we sit in our safe comfort zone, zoned and comforted, but not completely settled. A tiny bit aware (thanks to the media) that the world is larger than our personal opinions.

I’m pretty sure I won’t live to see the better, peaceful world I imagine. I hope you do. I hope enough humans figure out how to turn their skeptical suspicions into a more harmonic collaboration, but I have my doubts.

Let’s work to inhabit Mars, our recent panacea. Ditch the desecrated Earth and begin again! Having learned nothing, we may finally understand that “the enemy” is us.
