Lake trees, by Lori B. McCray

After the snow:

I got the pic I wanted but was it worth getting arrested? I pulled off the road, the next town over, because there was no place to turn around and no place to park and no swans at the pond so I just kept going and as soon as I saw a plowed lot I turned in, and before I even had my camera out a cruiser pulls in behind me. Not my first brush with the law. What are you doing. Taking a picture. Why? No, this officer was nice. I told him my story and he asked if I had been back in the woods and I said had just gotten there, was he looking for someone? (they’re always looking for someone). He said, it’s no trespassing back there (guardian angel protecting me because I might have wandered without knowing). So I showed him my license and he called it in and then he said I could take pictures and I thought, it had better be a flippin good one after all this.
