Dear UB:

I was saddened to hear of your death (insert ‘passing’ if death is too stark. I’m not big on euphemisms), grateful that you left peacefully. I’ve been missing you ~ our whimsical bantering, backing and forthing, chats which often led to deep discoveries, clarifications and sometimes, epiphanies. I love a good question and you have always had so many! Facing a difficult decision you would ask about the return on my investment, good businessman that you were. I’ve never had this level of trust and confidence with my parents, and have treasured our special friendship. Never did I feel pushed or prodded, just accepted, loved, and supported. What a blessing, and how I’ve tried to parent my precious son. Thank you for showing me the beauty and benefit, the respectfulness of careful listening, with an ear toward making things right, not to criticize what’s wrong. You are a gem.

My life would surely be different without you in it. You and Genie, your wonderful children, have included me in your family from the beginning, at Union Springs, and I am forever grateful. Thank you for championing my creativity, for having my photographs playing in a loop on your TV, and reading all my poems. I always say, “The Love goes on”, and I will carry you in my heart, remembering the special joy you brought into my life, just by you being you, loving me, being me. You will be dearly missed, my friend. Until we all meet again, I Love You, Lori Beth
